1. Keep Your Medicare Card Close
Treat your Medicare card like a credit card — store it securely and only take it with you when necessary, such as to medical appointments. If your card is lost or stolen, contact Medicare immediately to request a replacement.
2. Guard Your Medicare Number
Never share your Medicare number with anyone who isn’t a trusted health care provider, insurance agent, or Medicare representative. Scammers may pose as government officials, offering fake services or claiming there’s an “issue” with your account.
3. Review Your Medicare Summary Notices
Check your Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB) regularly. Look for charges you don’t recognize, duplicate billing, or services you never received. Report any discrepancies right away.
4. Be Skeptical of “Free” Offers
If someone promises you free medical equipment, testing, or services in exchange for your Medicare information, it’s likely a scam. Legitimate Medicare-covered services require a doctor’s order and are billed properly.
5. Hang Up on Unsolicited Calls
